Sadly, this is not exactly a commonly used expression anymore these days, although among born again followers of Jesus it should be. One of the things that Jesus taught was the concept of Honor. This is something that has all but disappeared in today's societies.
The first question that comes to mind is "Just what does the phrase 'Honor Bound' really say anyway?" To answer it, take a look first at some dictionary definitions of 'Honor':
To revere; to respect; to treat with deference and submission, and perform relative duties to.
To reverence; to manifest the highest veneration for, in words and actions; to entertain the most exalted thoughts of; to worship; to adore
To dignify; to raise to distinction or notice; to elevate in rank or station; to exalt. Men are sometimes honored with titles and offices, which they do not merit.
In each case, it is clear that to Honor someone involves two basic things:
1) Having high respect and reverence for that person.
2) A willingness to defer your own will and desires in favor of the person being Honored by submitting to their will and desires, considering them to be more important than your own.
It's easy to see here, that true honor is something that we very seldom give to anyone, because we seldom encounter anyone that inspires this level of respect.
Next is a definition of the other half of the phrase: 'Bound':
Held together, fastened, two or more parts made into a whole.
Given these two definitions, 'Honor Bound' must then mean that two persons are held together by a bond or fastening that is based on mutual honor. Each party giving reverence and respect to the other, thinking of each other continually, always having the interests and desires of the other in mind.
It's safe to say that most people can agree that God wants people to Honor Him. Given this exploration of what true honor really means, it becomes obvious that God is asking quite a lot of us. He wants us to give our entire selves to Him. Yet He does not expect this to be a one way exchange with us always giving and Him always receiving.
John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
If you think about this verse for just a moment, it is genuinely awesome. God's love is such that when He moved to show that love, His action was to GIVE. God is NOT just a taker. He always gives us more than we give Him. He expects and requires us to honor Him by giving our very lives to Him and seeking only His kingdom, His righteousness, doing His will in every aspect of our lives. At the same time He is waiting to receive honor from us, He is ready to give:
John 12:26, "If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour."
Take a moment right now, go back to the definitions of honor, then ponder this verse and let it fully impact your soul. Jesus is telling us that if we serve Him, GOD WILL HONOR US! In the fulfilment of this, we find the phrase we started out with . . . 'Honor Bound'. Two beings, God and You, bound forever together by mutual honor. The scope of this thought is more than the mortal mind can fully comprehend. If you will honor God and Serve Jesus, then the creator of the universe Himself is ready and willing to honor you.
The first honor that you can give to God is to accept the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross and invite Him to be your Lord.
