Ephesians 6:14, "Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;"
There are too many people today that only bother with the truth when it's convenient to them or won't stand in the way of something they want to do. Even among people who claim to be born again believers there are people that will not hesitate to 'tell a little white lie' to spare someone's feelings or to keep from getting into trouble. We're living in a time when truth, and the concept of being truthful is almost alien to most people. In business, advertising, law, and especially politics the truth and the person willing to stand up and be totally truthful is becoming more and more rare, to the point when even holders of some of the highest offices in the land, who are supposed to be examples to the rest of us, hold the truth in such contempt that they will lie to get elected or out of trouble, regardless of the damage caused to people who see this and say "politician so-and-so lied in court to get out of his or her mess and didn't go to jail for perjury, so if its' ok for them to lie then it's ok for me..." as a result, people who speak truth become that much more hard to find.
When you decide to be truthful no matter what, you become trustworthy. If people know that they can rely on you for the truth, then they will be more likely to trust you to be honest and upright in all your dealings. Just as when people know that you have a reputation for dishonesty they will be very reluctant to trust you in anything.
Truth is a very important part of a Christian's armor. When Paul wrote to the Ephesians about the armor of God, he drew a comparison with the best armor in use at the time, which was used by the Roman army. The belt that was a key part of it, was wide, made of heavy leather and covered from just below the breastplate where it was attached, to below the waist. It protected the wearer while at the same time allowing them enough flexibility to move. The soldier's weapons were hung from it, allowing easy access.
Truth serves the born again children of God in the same way as the belt did the roman soldiers. It comes along with and in fact is a part of righteousness. Truth is a foundation upon which honor is built. And just as the Roman soldier's sword was hung from his belt. The Word of God is slung upon the belt of truth. Truth is the only way that anyone can ever be saved because if you don't acknowledge the truth of the fact that you are a sinner and accept the free gift that Jesus gave us on the cross, then you will never enter the kingdom of God.
Revelation 21:8, "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
Truth is a fruit of the spirit: Ephesians 5:9, "(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth)" which means simply that one of the fruits of allowing ourselves to be led by the spirit of God is truth, our acceptance of it, and our willingness to let the truth be a central part of all that we do. If someone claims to be a child of God and does not do the things that God has told us to do, then that person is lying to God, himself, and everyone else:
1 John 2:4, "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
Truth is to be a central part of our relationship with God:
John 4:23, "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him."
God wants people to come to Him in truth, not pretending to be something they're not, or somehow holier or better than somebody else. Or thinking that they can somehow earn salvation if only they say this or that prayer, or beg Him long enough that He'll finally grant passage to heaven. He's interested in people who are willing to base their prayers on the truth which is in His word and the covenant that we have sealed in Jesus' blood. People who are willing to resist the devil and know that he will flee, and insist that he does.
Two reasons why God wants us to know the truth and be truthful. First, God IS truth: Exodus 34:5-6, "And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth," Second, knowing and speaking the truth in all things can free us from the bondage that lies can get us into: John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." When we walk in truth, we are doing something that might actually amaze some folks, giving God joy!
3 John 1:4, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."
The reasons for this are that to seriously walk in truth is righteousness, which means 'doing and being right'. And because if we are walking in truth, then we are placing ourselves in agreement with God, acknowledging that what He has said is true. This is an aspect of faith, without which you cannot please God:
Hebrews 11:6, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
So we should all make a quality decision to walk in truth, which is in God, and in His word. You may encounter many problems in life, but while they may be a fact, they are not the truth. So when the devil attacks you with worries over any kind of problem, go to the word of God and see what He said about it and wrap that truth about you like that roman belt. Don't agree with the devil when he's telling you that you've got some sickness, wrap yourself in the truth that by his stripes ye were healed (1 peter 2:24) and that He carried our sicknesses and diseases (matt 8:17). If satan is plaguing you with worries about financial needs, then remind yourself and him that the Lord has pleasure in the prosperity of His servants (ps 35:27). In studying and standing on the truth of God's word, and insisting that you are and have what He said that you are and have, you will truely be set free.
